Lesson 0014 Spoken Kannada ~11 min

Minutes past the hour

Move beyond whole hours: quarter, half, and “N minutes” so meeting times and train slots don’t force you into English only.

Audio: Machine-generated Kannada (edge-tts · kn-IN-SapnaNeural). Helpful for rhythm and recognition — may not perfectly match native Bengaluru pronunciation. Prefer what you hear from neighbours when the two differ.
Today’s win

Say and catch Aidu gante kaalu · Aidu gante ardha · Aidu gante hattu nimisha · Aidu gante-ge munche / nantara.

Spaced review: Eshtu gante aytu? · Aidu gante aytu · Ardha · Eega · Naale hattu gante-ge · Nimisha

01 Why this matters

L9 locked whole hours. Real life is 10:15, 7:30, 5 minutes late. Bengaluru mixes English clock times with Kannada glue — learn the Kannada spine so you hear both.

02 One lever: gante + fraction / nimisha

Pattern

Aidu gante kaalu ≈ 5:15 (quarter past)
Aidu gante ardha ≈ 5:30 (you know ardha)
Aidu gante muvattu nimisha ≈ 5:30 (literal minutes — also heard)
Aidu gante-ge hattu nimisha late ≈ 10 minutes late for 5:00

Kaalu = quarter (literally “leg/quarter”). Very common for :15. For :45 many people say English “quarter to” or next hour-ge munche kaalu — we’ll stay practical.
